On Broken Age, I created the Flip Book Animation System used for all character animation in the game.
This was a custom rigging + animation setup built around a hybrid approach: hand-drawn 2D parts were stitched onto flat 3D meshes, allowing the characters to deform like a rig while still keeping that illustrated, storybook look.
